Somewhere in the vast middle ground between "Bad Romance" and biotech lies a sentence nobody expected to write: Lady Gaga co-founded a life sciences company. And it's not a celebrity wellness brand hawking overpriced supplements. It's a startup that keeps chunks of human skin alive in a lab for a month.
The company is called Outer Biosciences, and it just came out of stealth after operating quietly since 2020. Gaga's fiancé, Michael Polansky, is the co-founder and CEO. The company has raised roughly $23 million from backers including Wing Ventures, Initialized, and Polansky's own firm, Hawktail. And the pitch is genuinely interesting, even if you strip away every ounce of celebrity glitter.

Polansky isn't some random celebrity spouse playing scientist. His background is more interesting than that.
He studied applied mathematics and computer science at Harvard, then spent time at Bridgewater Associates (the world's largest hedge fund) and Founders Fund (Peter Thiel's VC firm). He later ran Sean Parker's family office, which put him at the center of Parker's philanthropic and life sciences empire.
That connection is the key. He sits on the board of the Parker Institute for Cancer Immunotherapy (PICI), a nonprofit that channels hundreds of millions of dollars into cancer research.
By his own account, Polansky "got into life sciences accidentally" through more than a decade working alongside Parker in cancer immunotherapy. It wasn't a planned career path; it was osmosis. Spending years in rooms with top cancer researchers apparently rubs off on you.
Outer Biosciences was co-founded alongside Kyung-Jin Jang (the company's chief scientist), Chris Hinojosa, and Stanley King. Notably, Jang also sits on the scientific advisory board of Haus Labs, Gaga's beauty brand, and the two companies have already run joint projects together. That's a tidy pipeline: Outer discovers ingredients, Haus Labs potentially uses them.
Gaga is listed as a co-founder and board member of Outer Biosciences, not as its scientist-in-chief. Her role appears to be strategic and promotional rather than technical, which is exactly what you'd want from someone with a massive social media following and a beauty brand.
Her broader health footprint comes through the Born This Way Foundation, a youth mental health nonprofit she launched years ago. That organization is research-informed (it developed a Kindness and Bravery Scale with the University of Nebraska-Lincoln), but it's not biotech. The connection to Outer is less about science credentials and more about what Gaga brings to the table: attention, distribution, and a massive consumer audience for whatever ingredients the platform eventually produces.
Gaga and Polansky aren't operating in a vacuum. Celebrity money has been flooding into health and longevity startups over the past two years.
Tally Health, a consumer longevity company, counts John Legend, Chrissy Teigen, Pedro Pascal, Kevin Hart, and Zac Efron among its backers. The core risk with celebrity biotech is simple: fame can masquerade as validation. Consumers see a famous face and assume the science must be solid. That's not how evidence works. A seed round and a press hit are not substitutes for reproducible data and peer review.
Outer Biosciences has at least posted a bioRxiv preprint describing its tissue platform. That's more scientific disclosure than most celebrity-adjacent health companies have offered. But preprints are not peer-reviewed, and company-reported results haven't been independently validated yet. The science looks plausible; it just hasn't been stress-tested by outside researchers.
