

The CDC had a study showing COVID vaccines cut ER visits by half last winter. It passed internal review, was scheduled for publication, and then got shelved. The story behind the buried report raises uncomfortable questions about science, politics, and public trust.
Imagine your doctor runs a test, finds something important, and then locks the results in a drawer. That's essentially what happened at the CDC this year.
A report showing COVID-19 vaccines cut emergency room visits and hospitalizations by roughly half among healthy adults last winter was ready to go. It had passed internal scientific review. It was scheduled for publication in March 2026. And then someone pulled the plug.
The report, titled "Interim Effectiveness of 2025-2026 COVID-19 Vaccines in Adults," was slated for the CDC's Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR) on March 19, 2026. The MMWR is basically the CDC's weekly bulletin board for doctors, researchers, and state health officials. It's been published continuously since 1961. Think of it as the box score for American public health: fast, factual, relied upon by everyone who makes decisions about disease.
The study looked at immunocompetent adults (people with normal immune systems) aged 18 and older during the 2025–2026 fall and winter season. Its findings were straightforward. The updated COVID vaccine reduced emergency department and urgent care visits by 50% (with a 95% confidence interval of 42%–57%). It reduced hospitalizations by 55% (95% CI: 41%–66%).
Those aren't miracle numbers, but they're meaningful. A coin-flip reduction in ER trips and hospital stays, across a broad adult population, is the kind of data that shapes whether your doctor recommends a shot and whether insurers keep covering it.
So why didn't it get published?
CDC acting Director Jay Bhattacharya reportedly stopped the publication. HHS spokesperson Andrew Nixon said the review raised concerns about the study's "methodological approach" and that the manuscript was not accepted for publication.
The study used something called a test-negative design, which is the standard playbook for real-world vaccine effectiveness research. It compares people who test positive for COVID against people who test negative, then checks who was vaccinated and who wasn't. It's widely used, well-understood, and specifically designed to account for differences in who actually shows up to a clinic.

Former CDC researcher Fiona Havers defended the approach publicly, noting that CDC officials hadn't offered a realistic alternative for producing timely estimates. Former CDC immunization chief Demetre Daskalakis was blunter: suppressing a cleared report, he said, is not "transparent scientific expertise." He accused leadership of "cherry picking" based on bias.
In other words, the methodology wasn't exotic or untested. It was the same approach the CDC has used for years to evaluate flu shots and other vaccines. Calling it flawed is a bit like saying you can't trust a thermometer because you don't like the temperature.
If this story feels familiar, it should. Congressional investigators documented a pattern during the first Trump administration in 2020, finding 88 separate incidents of political interference with CDC scientific work between February and October of that year alone. Officials tried to alter or block at least 13 scientific reports.
A broader investigation counted over 80 incidents of political interference by mid-2021, including attempts to prevent CDC scientists from speaking to the media and halting public telebriefings entirely.
The pattern looks the same: political appointees review scientific findings, raise vague objections, and the report either gets delayed, rewritten, or shelved. The scientists who did the work are left watching from the sidelines.
Vaccine confidence in the U.S. is already fragile. According to KFF polling, only 56% of adults express at least some confidence that COVID vaccines are safe. That number splits dramatically by party: roughly 87% of Democrats, 55% of independents, and just 30% of Republicans.
Meanwhile, uptake is dismal. As of April 2025, only 20.4% of U.S. adults had received the 2024–25 COVID vaccine. Just 8.1% said they definitely planned to get one.
CDC survey data consistently shows that confidence in vaccine safety and belief that vaccines are important are the strongest predictors of whether someone actually rolls up their sleeve. Adults who believed the vaccine was safe had a vaccination rate of 36.8%, compared to just 4.5% among those who didn't.
So when the agency responsible for building that confidence buries its own evidence that vaccines work, it's not just a bureaucratic hiccup. It's pouring gasoline on a trust crisis that's already burning.
Reporting indicates the study was eventually published elsewhere, outside the MMWR. That's a small consolation; the data is at least available for researchers and clinicians who go looking for it. But the MMWR isn't just another journal. It's the channel that state health departments, hospital systems, and primary care doctors rely on for timely guidance. Publishing vaccine data in an alternative outlet is like announcing a recall on page 47 of a newspaper nobody subscribes to.
The whole point of the MMWR is speed and reach. A vaccine effectiveness study published months late, through back channels, loses most of its practical value. Doctors making recommendations during flu and COVID season needed that data in March, not whenever it finally surfaced.
Public health runs on trust, and trust runs on transparency. The CDC's own data shows that the single most effective way to get someone vaccinated is a strong recommendation from their healthcare provider. But providers need evidence to make those recommendations confidently.
Strip that evidence away (or bury it in a drawer) and you don't just lose a study. You lose the chain of trust that connects a lab finding to a doctor's advice to a patient's decision. Every link in that chain depends on the belief that the system is working honestly.
Whether you think COVID vaccines are essential or overrated, the principle is the same: the public deserves to see the data. Let people argue about what the numbers mean. Let scientists debate methodology in the open. But hiding a study that passed your own review process, one that shows a 50% reduction in ER visits, isn't caution. It's censorship wearing a lab coat.
