

The FDA is expected to rule on Moderna's mRNA flu vaccine on August 5, a decision that could mark the first time mRNA technology cracks the seasonal flu market. After a bumpy regulatory road, a unanimous advisory committee vote, and 70 years of egg-based dominance, the stakes couldn't be higher.
Every fall, hundreds of millions of flu vaccines roll off production lines that would look familiar to a scientist from the 1950s. Fertilized chicken eggs, six months of manufacturing, and a prayer that the virus grows well enough to keep up with demand. It's the oldest trick in vaccinology's book.
On August 5, the FDA is expected to decide whether Moderna's mRNA-based flu vaccine, mRNA-1010, deserves a spot on the market. If approved, it would be the first-ever mRNA seasonal flu vaccine, and the most significant validation of the technology since COVID-19 proved it could work at scale.
The stakes go well beyond one product. This is a referendum on whether mRNA can break into the biggest, most entrenched vaccine market on the planet.
Most people don't realize their flu shot started its life inside a chicken egg. Manufacturers inject influenza viruses into millions of fertilized eggs, let them replicate, harvest the fluid, purify it, and ship it out. The whole process takes about six months from strain selection to finished product.
That timeline creates real problems. Flu strains mutate constantly, and by the time vaccines hit pharmacies, the match between what's in the vial and what's circulating can be mediocre. Some strains, especially H3N2, grow poorly in eggs, which tanks yields and weakens the final product. It's a bit like trying to photocopy a photocopy: each step introduces distortion.
mRNA sidesteps all of that. Instead of growing live virus, you just need the genetic sequence. Upload the code, synthesize the RNA, and package it. No eggs. No viral propagation. Think of it as switching from a printing press to a laser printer: same output, radically different process.
Moderna's path to this moment has been anything but smooth. The company first submitted its application in December 2025, and the FDA responded with a rare slap: a refusal-to-file letter in February 2026. Not a rejection of the vaccine itself, but a bureaucratic red card over study design.

The issue? Moderna's pivotal trial in adults 65 and older used a standard-dose flu vaccine as the comparator. The FDA wanted to see mRNA-1010 tested against the enhanced vaccines (high-dose and adjuvanted shots) that are actually recommended for seniors. Moderna and the FDA had apparently discussed this beforehand, but the agency ultimately decided the comparator wasn't good enough.
What followed was a rapid negotiation. Moderna requested a high-priority meeting with the FDA and proposed a creative workaround: seek full approval for adults 50 to 64 (where the trial data were clean) and accelerated approval for adults 65 and older, with a post-marketing study to fill in the gaps. The FDA agreed, accepted the revised application on February 18, 2026, and set the August 5 deadline.
It was a clever save, but it left a lingering question mark over the vaccine's standing in the population that needs it most.
On June 18, the FDA's outside advisory committee (VRBPAC) reviewed the evidence and voted 9-0 that benefits outweigh risks, for both age groups. Unanimous. That's about as strong an endorsement as you can get in the regulatory world.
The headline number from the pivotal Phase 3 trial: mRNA-1010 reduced flu illness by 26.6% more than a standard-dose flu vaccine in adults 50 and older. Broken down by strain, the advantage held up across the board, with relative efficacy of roughly 22% to 30% depending on the flu type.
Perhaps more telling: people who got the mRNA shot had 33.7% fewer flu-related medical visits. In a healthcare system that dreads flu season like restaurants dread health inspectors, that's a meaningful reduction.
But the committee flagged real caveats. The data cover only one flu season, which limits confidence in year-to-year consistency. There's little information on frail seniors and immunocompromised patients, the very people who suffer the most from influenza. And the influenza B data were thin, based on a small number of confirmed cases. The panel said yes, but with a clear message: show us more.
If there's one knock on mRNA-1010, it's reactogenicity (the fancy word for side effects you feel the next day). About 66% of recipients reported injection-site pain, compared to 30% with the standard flu shot. Fatigue, headaches, and muscle aches were all more common too.
The good news: these reactions were mostly mild, short-lived, and the kind of thing that resolves with ibuprofen and a nap. Serious adverse events ran at about 2.2%, roughly the same as the standard vaccine. No new safety signals emerged across tens of thousands of participants. So you'll probably feel crummier the day after, but the actual risk profile looks comparable to what's already on the market.
Moderna isn't the only company chasing mRNA flu vaccines, but it's the only one anywhere near the finish line. Pfizer and BioNTech have a candidate in late-stage trials, still some time from a potential approval. Sanofi actually pulled the plug on its seasonal mRNA flu program in 2025, choosing to focus on pandemic preparedness instead. And the traditional giants (CSL Seqirus, GSK) continue to dominate with egg-based and cell-based products.
That means if the FDA says yes on Tuesday, Moderna gets a rare gift: first-mover advantage in a market worth roughly $9 to 10 billion globally. Analysts at Jefferies project that U.S. flu and flu/COVID combination vaccine sales for Moderna could reach $750 million by 2030. The company is also filing for review in the EU, Canada, and Australia, with additional submissions planned throughout 2026.
For a company still burning cash, with continued net losses expected, mRNA-1010 isn't just another product. It's the bridge to proving that mRNA technology has a commercial life beyond COVID.
The FDA typically follows unanimous advisory committee votes, so approval is widely expected. But the details will matter enormously. How the agency labels the vaccine, what post-marketing studies it requires, and whether the CDC's immunization committee gives it a preferential recommendation for seniors: all of these factors will shape how quickly doctors and pharmacies adopt it.
The bigger picture transcends any single product. For 70 years, flu vaccines have been made essentially the same way. If mRNA-1010 succeeds commercially, it signals that the technology born from a pandemic can reshape routine medicine. If it stumbles (on uptake, on pricing, on the post-marketing studies), it could set back the entire mRNA platform narrative.
Either way, the egg-based flu shot just got its most serious challenger. Tuesday, we find out if the future is ready to hatch.
