Uncle Sam Wants a Cancer Vaccine, and Moderna's Stock Got the Memo
Moderna surged 14% to a 52-week high after news broke of a national cancer vaccine initiative modeled on Operation Warp Speed. The public-private effort, led by the NIH's National Cancer Institute, will target pancreatic, liver, and colorectal cancers with a formal launch in December 2026. The catch: at roughly $200 million, it has about 1/90th the funding of its pandemic predecessor. Still, it signals the U.S. government now treats cancer vaccines as a national priority, not an academic side project. ESMO data on Moderna's personalized cancer vaccine drops October 24.
Why it matters: This initiative marks the first time the federal government has applied the coordinated Warp Speed model to oncology, potentially reshaping the infrastructure for personalized cancer vaccine development and validating mRNA platform companies as long-term plays beyond COVID.

The First Human Test of Cellular Reprogramming Just Produced Results
Two out of three glaucoma patients showed vision improvements after receiving Life Biosciences' ER-100, a gene therapy that partially rewinds the biological clock inside damaged retinal cells. It's the first-ever human data for cellular reprogramming. The sample is tiny and there's no control group, but glaucoma typically only goes one direction: worse. A safety board cleared dose escalation, moving the field from theoretical to clinical.

CRISPR Therapeutics scored a late-breaking oral slot at AHA 2026 for CTX310, its in-vivo gene-editing therapy that silences a lipid-regulating gene called ANGPTL3 with a single infusion. Phase 1 data showed 73% reductions in ANGPTL3 and 49% drops in LDL cholesterol that held for a year. November 9 will reveal whether those results hold in sicker patients.

FDA Opens an Unprecedented Door for RNA Editing Therapies
Wave Life Sciences received FDA alignment on an accelerated approval path for its therapy WVE-006, which edits faulty RNA in patients with alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency, shifting their biology from severe disease toward carrier status. In early data, the harmful protein dropped 60% and effects lasted months after dosing stopped. The precedent matters for every company in the RNA editing space.

Teva's Weltruza is the first subcutaneous olanzapine injection for schizophrenia, and crucially, it doesn't require the three-hour post-injection monitoring that made the old version a logistical nightmare. Across 3,470 injections in trials, zero cases of post-injection delirium were observed. For a disease where 40%+ of patients stop taking daily pills, one painless monthly shot could be transformative.

FDA review documents revealed uneven subgroup results for Revolution's already-approved pancreatic cancer drug Rasonque, sparking a sell-off that analysts called "overdone." Separately, Zealand's obesity candidate petrelintide posted 9.2% weight loss with near-placebo tolerability, solid numbers that look modest next to GLP-1 leaders pushing 15-20%. In both cases, the market graded on a curve and found the results wanting.

Six Pharma Giants in Nine Months: Chai Discovery's Protein-Folding AI Keeps Winning
GSK became Chai Discovery's latest major pharma partner this year, joining Lilly, Pfizer, Novartis, and BMS among others. The clincher: GSK tested Chai's AI-designed molecules in real labs and found they bound to every single target tested, zero-shot. Now valued at $3.8 billion after a $400 million Series C, Chai is making the case that AI protein-structure tools have crossed from novelty to infrastructure.
